History

Young women in the rural regions around Marrakech had extremely limited options. Due to the absence of secondary establishments in their villages, they were either married off, kept at home, or sent to work as maids in the larger cities.

Although secondary schooling was available by commute, only boys were given access to bicycles in order to make the trip. Our organization saw a community in need and have now built a boarding house able to accommodate up to 200 girls while they attend a nearby school.

When the house opened in 2005 thanks to charitable donations, thirteen girls called it home. Now, only three years later, one hundred and seven young women are using this facility to obtain something previously out of their reach; a quality education and a path to a brighter future.

Admission Criteria

- The House is strictly for students that have completed their primary education with honors (an average grade of 14/20 or more)

- An entrance exam is mandatory for all candidates.

- The girls come exclusively from remote rural regions that are at least 10 km away from schools or collages. There is no exception to this rule.

- The House guarantees room and board, a study room, a multimedia room a, library, academic and social support, all free of charge.

- Repeating a grade is not allowed under any circumstances.

Administration

To ensure the viability and sustainability of the project, the House is constituted into an "association de gestion" and has an administrative committee.

The committee is formed as follows:

- The president of the committee who is mandatorily a member of Soroptimist-Marrakech and is elected to the post by this group.

- The vice-president of the committee who is the current president of Soroptimist-Marrakech.

- A representative of each social partner.

- A secretary

- A treasurer

- A director

- A person responsible for procurement

Staff
